Nyctopod

(NEEDS UPDATE)

Nyctopods are long-limbed, digitigrade runners built for open terrain, resembling a deep-bodied monitor lizard raised onto high, angled legs. They are crepuscular hunters, most active at dusk and dawn when Ephron's temperatures moderate and prey animals emerge for their own feeding windows. Their scales shed entirely once per season in a single intact piece rather than patchwork flaking, leaving behind a complete and detailed negative impression of the animal's body. These sheds harden quickly in dry air and hold their form for months. Nyctopods are solitary and cover enormous territories, rarely seen twice in the same location. They are not aggressive toward large creatures unless cornered, relying instead on speed to disengage.

Among Arkafelari colonies, Nyctopod sheds hold significant spiritual weight. Because Eilan imprints linger in organic material left at locations of emotional intensity, sheds found near old camp sites, buried dead, or contested borders are believed to carry residual psychic impressions of events witnessed by the animal. Collectors known informally as skin-readers seek out aged sheds and claim to interpret their Eilan signatures, though the practice is contested even within colony traditions. The sheds themselves are also practically useful, stiffened and trimmed, they serve as lightweight protective panels, bowls, and water-shedding roof material.
